What warming up a TikTok account means
Warming up means using a new account like a normal person before you post. You watch, like and follow inside one niche so the account has a history. UGC creators do it for every brand campaign account, because many brands ask for it: "warm up the account for about an hour or two and then start posting."
Why it might help: a fresh account with no history that posts right away looks like a throwaway. A few days of niche watching gives TikTok something to go on. Be clear about the limits, though. TikTok has never published a warm-up rule, some creators call it a myth, and others warm up for days and still sit in "view jail". Treat it as cheap insurance, not a guarantee.
The day-by-day plan
Creators in our research mostly spend 20 to 30 minutes a day on it. Three days is the usual UGC norm ("I'm in my 72 hour warm up account"), and generic guides say 7. If a brand gives you its own rules, follow those.
- Day 1: set up and search. Add a profile photo, name and bio that match the niche. Search the niche keyword the brand gave you, or the topic you'll post about. Watch videos to the end. Like 1 in 5 or 6. Don't post.
- Day 2: build the feed. Open For You and only stay on niche videos. Swipe past anything off-topic quickly. Follow 2 to 5 creators you'd actually watch. Favourite a couple of videos.
- Day 3: check the feed. Most of your For You page should now be your niche. If it isn't, spend another day searching and watching. Many brands ask for a screen recording of your For You page as proof.
- Days 4 to 7: keep going, then post. Continue the daily session. Post your first video when the feed looks right, then keep watching for a few minutes a day after that.
What not to do
- Don't spam. As one creator put it, the "MAIN thing is, Is to NOT look like a bot. Don't spam like or follow a bunch of people all at once."
- Don't mix niches. "stick to that specific niche or it will ruin your account."
- Don't share a phone or network across many accounts if you can avoid it. Creators often blame that for accounts going cold.
- Don't push past a warning. If TikTok says "You're tapping too fast" or shows a puzzle, stop for the day.
New accounts can be restricted from liking at first. One creator wrote that on a day-old account "the like heart disappears within 5 seconds". If that happens, just watch for a day.
TokGrow's Warm up plays niche videos in its own small window for 20 minutes a day, so you get the time back.
Add to Chrome, freeHow long to warm up a TikTok account
| Situation | Days | Minutes a day |
|---|---|---|
| Brand gave you rules | Whatever they say | Whatever they say |
| UGC campaign account, no rules | 3 | 20 to 30 |
| New personal or business account | 5 to 7 | 15 to 30 |
| Account already active in the niche | None needed | Normal use |
Creators push back on brands that ask for hours: "1-2 hours warming up each account is tedious you do not need to be doing that." Nobody has shown that longer sessions work better.
Warm up a TikTok account on a laptop
You can warm up on desktop. TikTok's website has the For You feed, search, likes, favourites and follows. Use one browser profile per account, signed in to that account only. The website lacks some app features, so if a brand needs app screen time, do part of it on a phone.
Warm up with TokGrow
Doing this by hand for several accounts is "a total slog". TokGrow is a free Chrome extension, our TikTok auto liker, with a Warm up mode built for this job. Here is how it's designed to work:
- You name 2 or 3 creators in your niche during setup. Warm up watches videos like theirs.
- 20 minutes a day for 7 days by default (you can set 10 to 40), watching each video for 60 to 100% of its length.
- Likes about 1 video in 6 and favourites a few. It never follows, comments or posts.
- Runs in a small TikTok window of its own while Chrome is open, so you can use the rest of your computer. It closes when you press Stop.
- Stops for the day at TikTok's first warning, a captcha included. It never tries to solve one.
- Switches to Grow after day 7 if you leave that on. Grow likes 2 videos each from people who follow your chosen creators. See what a TikTok growth tool should do.
Warm up on TikTok hasn't finished our own live testing yet, so treat the above as the design. TikTok doesn't allow automation, and no tool can promise an account stays clear of limits. TokGrow never asks for your password, and your lists stay on your computer. Add TokGrow to Chrome for free.
Frequently asked questions
How many days does it take to warm up a TikTok account?
Three days is the most common answer from UGC creators, and many guides say 7. Brands sometimes ask for anywhere from 2 to 5. Follow the brand if it gives you a number.
Do you have to warm up a TikTok account?
No one can prove it's required, and TikTok has never said so. Many brands ask for it anyway, and it costs little. A new account that watches its niche first at least starts with a feed that matches what it will post.
Can I post during the warm-up?
Most creators wait until the For You page is mostly their niche, usually after day 3. Then they start with one post and keep watching each day.
Should I follow people while warming up?
A few. Creators suggest 2 to 10 niche creators a day, chosen by hand. Mass following in one sitting is a common reason accounts get limited.
Will warming up stop a shadowban?
No method guarantees that. Read what a TikTok shadowban is and what tends to cause it. A warm-up only helps with the "brand new account with no history" part.
