What people mean by a TikTok shadowban
Creators say "shadowban" when their views fall off a cliff and nothing tells them why. A video that would usually reach a few thousand people stalls at a few hundred. New posts stop showing under hashtags. Friends can't find the account in search.
TikTok has never confirmed a feature called a shadowban. What it does have are rules about which videos can be recommended. A video, or a whole account, can be marked as not eligible for the For You feed. It stays on your profile, and your followers can still see it, but TikTok stops pushing it to new people. For most creators that feels exactly like a shadowban, because the For You feed is where almost all new views come from.
There is also a plainer explanation that people don't like to hear: sometimes the content just stopped working. A run of videos with low watch time gets shown to fewer people, with no penalty involved.
Signs your reach is restricted
- Views stuck in a narrow band. Several posts in a row end up with nearly the same low count, often called "view jail".
- For You traffic near zero. In your video analytics, the share of views from the For You feed drops while profile and follower views stay.
- Hashtag and search gaps. Your new videos don't appear when you search your own hashtag or exact caption from another account.
- A notice in the app. TikTok tells you when a video or account has been restricted for a guideline reason. Check your notifications and the account status section of your settings.
One slow week isn't a sign of anything. Compare at least five or six posts before you decide something is wrong.
TokGrow likes a few videos of people in your niche each day and stops for the day at TikTok's first warning, free in Chrome.

Most reach drops trace back to one of these:
- A guideline problem. A video that breaks TikTok's Community Guidelines, or one TikTok judges unsuitable for the feed, can be held back. Repeated problems can affect the whole account.
- Unoriginal or reposted content. Reuploads of other people's clips and content with someone else's watermark tend to get less distribution.
- Behaviour that looks automated. Liking, following or commenting in fast bursts is the classic trigger for TikTok's limits. Creators also blame running several accounts from one phone or network: "I have three accounts in one device that must be why my account went cold."
- A new account with no history. An account that posts on day one, before it has watched anything, gives TikTok little to go on. This is why UGC creators warm up a TikTok account before posting.
- Content that people skip. Low watch time and fast swipes away tell the feed to show the next video to fewer people.
How to fix a TikTok shadowban
- Check for a notice first. If TikTok has flagged a video, it says so in the app and usually lets you appeal. Appeal anything you think was a mistake, and delete posts that clearly broke a rule.
- Stop anything that looks like a bot. Pause auto-likers, follow-for-follow and engagement groups. If you've seen "You're tapping too fast" recently, that's a sign you were over TikTok's pace.
- Take a few days off posting. Many creators report reach recovering after a short break. Reports vary from a day to a few weeks, and none of it is confirmed by TikTok.
- Use the app like a person. Watch videos in your niche to the end, like a few, follow a handful of creators you actually want to see.
- Post original videos again. Your own footage, your own sound choices, no other app's watermark. Then judge the next five posts, not the next one.
Where TokGrow fits
TokGrow is a free Chrome extension, our TikTok auto liker. It likes 2 videos each from people who follow creators like you, so they see your name in their notifications. TikTok doesn't allow automation, so no tool, ours included, is free of risk. What TokGrow does is keep the pace low and visible, which is the opposite of what usually gets accounts limited:
| What gets accounts limited | What TokGrow does |
|---|---|
| Bursts of likes and follows | At most 3 likes a minute, at least 8 seconds apart, in short batches with 2 to 10 minute breaks |
| High daily volume from day one | 40 likes on day one, 10 more only after a clean day, a ceiling of 150, and a light day every 7 days |
| Following hundreds of people | Never follows on its own. You press Follow, one person at a time, at least 20 seconds apart |
| Carrying on after a warning | Built to stop for the day at TikTok's first warning, including a captcha, then run 20% slower |
TokGrow never comments, never sends messages and never asks for your password. It runs in a small TikTok window of its own while Chrome is open. Add TokGrow to Chrome for free.
Frequently asked questions
Is the TikTok shadowban real?
TikTok doesn't use the term. It does limit which videos can appear in the For You feed, and it can restrict accounts that break its rules. So the effect creators describe is real, even if the name isn't TikTok's.
How long does a TikTok shadowban last?
There is no official answer. Creators report anything from a day to about a month. If there's a guideline notice, the appeal result decides it. If there isn't, steady posting without bot-like behaviour is usually what brings reach back.
Can an auto liker get me shadowbanned?
It can. Fast, high-volume liking is one of the behaviours TikTok limits. If you use any tool, keep daily numbers low, avoid bursts and stop at the first warning. TokGrow is built around those three rules, but it can't promise TikTok won't act.
How do I check if I'm shadowbanned on TikTok?
Look for a notice in your notifications and account status first. Then compare the For You share of views on your last several videos, and search your own new hashtags from a second account. All three together tell you more than any online "shadowban checker".
Will warming up my account prevent a shadowban?
Nothing prevents it for sure. A short warm-up gives a new account a normal watch history before it posts, which many UGC creators and brands ask for. Some creators think it makes no difference, and good content still matters more.
